CHANEL CRUISE ’24 – THE BARBIE THAT COULDA SHOULDA

The Foresight. Hollywood blondes in loungewear, slippers and bikinis. Virginie Viard created looks to coincide with the Barbie movie, that also featured its fair share of Chanela clothes and accessories.
But the doll-like creations for the Chanel resort collection were very different than the movie ideal orchestrated by Greta Gerwig and played icon-cool by Margot Robbie.
Sure, as with anything Chanel, the show was lifestyle oriented, and with its fair share of shocking pinks. This was not a sweet coincidence after all;  Chanel and Barbie designed to complement each other to movie promoting precision.
But Chanel’s LA and movie inspired silhouettes, while certainly mining the Barbie product catalogue for themes and colors, took a different approach to defining how ‘that’ woman interacts with her Rodeo Drive lifestyle.  Gerwig’s iteration was formed of a classic ideal engaging with the present, while Chanel envisioned a woman already wise to the ways of the world, their models filitered through lifetime exposure to television, streetwear and tempered idealism.
The Barbie movie created an empowering vision of women getting what they want by undertanding their full worth. Chanel women have always known that, of course.
Barbie 2 anyone?
